  • 1 ¼ Cup Cooking Oil

Instructions

  • Crispy fried chicken has been part of America’s southern cooking traditions dating back to the 1800s. It’s a delicious and relatively easy dish that is both affordable and quick to prepare. To make crispy fried chicken you will need all-purpose cooking flour, salt, pepper, garlic salt or pepper, eggs, buttermilk, cooking oil and of course chicken.

  • The most important thing to do to ensure the final product taste good is seasoning the chicken. For this recipe, we are using garlic salt or garlic powder, salt, and pepper. First, you need to take your pieces of chicken and thoroughly clean them. You should take the cleaned chicken and put them into a bowl of buttermilk and let them sit overnight. Be sure to allow the chicken to be fully submerged in the buttermilk. The buttermilk will make the chicken tenderer once it is cooked.

  • After the chicken has soaked in the buttermilk overnight. Take each piece and dig it into a bowl of raw eggs. The eggs allow the seasoning and flour to stick to the chicken better and makes the chicken crispier. Next liberally add garlic and pepper. Be careful when adding salt, because too much is not only unhealthy, but it can ruin the dish. Feel free, at this step of the process to include or exclude any seasoning. Salt is the only ingredient needed at this step because salt will enhance the flavor of the chicken itself the seasoning is at the discretion of your taste or preference.

  • Once the chicken has been cleaned, marinated overnight in buttermilk and seasoned it is time to add flour to the chicken. The flouring step can be done a few different ways. You can use a plate and pour a liberal amount of flour on it, and take one piece of chicken at a time and roll it around in the flour until it is fully coated with flour. You can also use a plastic or paper bag about one fourth filled with flour and place one to three pieces of chicken in the bag. Once the chicken is in the bag, shake it until the chicken is fully coated in flour.

  • The frying of the chicken can be done using a 4-inch skillet, or a deep fryer. The cooking oil should be any oil that has a high smoke temperature because the oil should be heated to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the oil is at the correct temperature place the flour-coated pieces in the hot oil for 12 – 15 minutes or until golden brown. Remove the cooked chicken and place them on napkins to allow the extra oil to drain. Let cool and enjoy. Typically if you fry a three to four pound chicken it will be enough for 6 or maybe seven people.
